Easy Spring Mom Hairstyles for Long Hair

Today we are bringing you a super fun post covering hairstyle trends for moms!

Hair can often fall under that "self-care" category we don't give ourselves enough time for.

We are here to help (and hopefully not overwhelm) you with some easy tips on how to keep your hair up-to-date, whether it be with cut, color, accessories, or hairstyles!

Corina and I asked a sweet mutual friend and hair stylist, Kenna Balvanz, to share with us some of her suggestions, tips, and tricks (and photos!) and we hope you'll value what she shared with us as much as we do! Here are 10+ ideas on how you can update your hairstyle either with a new cut or color or just some fresh styling ideas or accessories! #hair #hairstyle #fashion #momlife #ideas

We've combined her knowledge and what we know moms love and put together this post we hope you will find helpful.

Kenna went to beauty school and after working in a salon for a few years, went on her own to focus on hair styling, airbrush makeup, and even her own clothing boutique!

You can visit her over on Instagram @kennabalvanz – she is real and genuine, ladies, and I love following her!

Trending Haircuts

Bangs! Both curtain bangs, which frame your face really well, and fringe bangs, which are more wispy, have been really on trend.

Bangs are such an easy way to change up your hair style without a huge commitment.

They grow out quickly if you get bored and want to change it up!

Going along with curtain bangs, any sort of layered facial framing is popular.

For the bulk of your hair, we are seeing more blunt lengths, whether short bobs or long locks, with long layers instead of short ones.

Basically the more low-maintenance, the more popular we feel it is!

This is also the case for people with naturally curly or straight hair – whatever works best for what your hair naturally does!

Trending Hair Colors

We feel this topic can be so different for each person and their coloring, but we're going to do our best to guide you in what we are seeing out there!

Following last year's craziness, a lot of people are opting for colors and blends that are closer to their natural color and/or will grow out easily without lots of upkeep.

This is perfect for mom life!

Warm tones are definitely more "in" (we see this in clothes too!). Warm blondes, deep reds, and rich caramel brown, etc!

Keep in mind though—if you have cool-toned skin you should opt for highlights/balayage in ash blond or platinum tones instead of warm ones.

Balayage is a great technique to add some depth and richness to your hair color without committing to a whole new color. This tends to grow out well too!

Ask your hair stylist to do some blending near the roots so that it looks natural as it grows out and won't require regular upkeep.

Claw Clips

Well you've probably been living under a rock if you haven't seen the claw clips going around!!

Styling a claw clip with your hair half up/half down or all up has been so popular and Kenna said it's a personal favorite of hers this season.

As we mentioned in our post about Spring and Summer Trends, clips are "in" and are a super good way to keep your hair out of your face.

Headbands & Small Clips

Headbands and clips are both great ways to keep your hair (especially bangs!) out of your face.

You can wear headbands with your hair down or up, and I find myself using clips often just to pin front sections of my hair back. I love having my hair down, but obviously, as a mom, it's not always that convenient to have hair falling in the dishes or diapers!?

Scrunchies

We've all seen and experienced scrunchies at some point in our lives, whether we embraced them in our childhood or in the last few years.?

Scrunchies are great for minimizing hair damage and they add just a little something extra to your basic ponytails and messy buns.

Hats

Kenna also reminded me that hats are perfect for second or third day hair.

After spending a good part of my spring driving my boys back and forth to soccer practice, I fell in love with my basic black ballcap all over again.

It keeps my hair fairly contained, but also doesn't require having to pull it back. I wore it so much I ordered myself a pink baseball hat for summer!

Corina also has a fun post from the beginning of her blogging days about all the different ways to wear a fedora or straw hat.

It's one of my go-to posts for summer fashion – perfect way to mix up outfits when you don't want to add extra layers!

Hairstyle Trends That Aren't a Ponytail

We talked this above, but it bears repeating.

One of the most popular hairstyle trends to wear right now is using a claw clip with your hair all up or half up/half down.

This keeps your hair out of your face and you look much more updated than a basic ponytail!

Half up/half down is such a perfect way to get the best of both worlds, but if you don't want a bulky clip, a little half bun is great!

Also braids are a fun way to pull your hair back and they cut down on a lot of damage!

It may take a little practice if you aren't used to doing them, but I don't find they take me any longer than curling or straightening my hair.

Easy Hair Care Tips for Moms

I love gleaning little nuggets of wisdom from professionals so I asked Kenna if she could share with me some of her favorite hair care tips to help us round out our post.

  1. A super basic, but very important tip Kenna said many people don't know is to focus your shampoo on your roots and focus your conditioner on your ends! Shampoo is meant to remove oils, and oils live on the scalp. Conditioner is meant to hydrate and your ends are what needs hydration.
  2. In that same theme, she also recommends that everyone deep condition their hair. Not only does it keep your hair healthy and shiny, it will also help with any damage from heat styling or color services!
  3. As far as products go, her go-to is the "It's A 10" leave in conditioner spray! It does so many things for you in one little spray and it's the only thing she puts in her hair when it's wet.
  4. Kenna's last tip is get regular trims. I know, I know we all hear this and kinda roll our eyes but it's true! Your hair will be so much healthier and it will grow so much better.
